Elzie Crisler Segar might not be a household name, but the Popeye creator has become the latest person to be honoured with his own Google Doodle. The internet search giant has depicted the rambunctious cartoon seaman in typically feisty pose on what would have been Segar’s 115th birthday. Popeye the Sailor – who famously attributed his strength “to the finish” to his consumption “of spinach” – first entered the public consciousness in January 1929, in Segar’s newspaper comic strip Thimble Theatre.
The cartoonist was born in Illinois, US, on 8 December 1894, and showed a talent for drawing at a young age. Segar worked as a film projectionist while studying a correspondence course in cartooning, eventually moving to Chicago to pursue his career. [...]

The Mega Millions lottery jackpot has gotten huge since the Mega Millions winning numbers announced yesterday haven’t resulted in a winner yet. If the Mega Millions lottery results Friday end up in a win, the lucky lottery ticket holder will win $325 million, the third biggest mega millions jackpot ever.
From the Philadelphia Inquirer:

The $325 million up for grabs on Friday is the total for 26 payouts over 25 years. Can’t wait? The cash windfall is $206.4 million (minus no small fortune in taxes). The numbers no one completely matched last night were 3, 12, 19, 22 and 40, with a Mega Ball of 2.

Some interesting trivia:
The Frost Bank Tower was the first skyscraper constructed in the USA after the terrorist attacks on 9/11.
It’s been the tallest building in Austin since then, but it’s about to lose that title to a couple of buildings.
It was voted best new building by Austin Chronicle readers in 2004.
There are conspiracy theories put forth about the tower being somehow connected to the Bohemian Grove and Molech.

While completing her master’s degree in organizational communication at the University of Texas at Austin, Shama Kabani wrote her thesis on why people use Twitter and other social networking sites. She became convinced businesses could use the tools to market their products and services.
But when Kabani made that pitch as she applied for jobs at big management consulting firms such as McKinsey and Bain & Co. in 2006, she was rejected. “At that point, nobody really cared for social media knowhow. They were just thinking, ‘This is a fad. Our clients don’t really need it.’ ” Undeterred, Kabani, whose parents are both entrepreneurs, founded her own full-service online marketing firm in March 2008, to build Web sites, handle SEO, and create and manage social media campaigns. Senators have passed the final conference report to the 2010 Legislative Branch Appropriations Act (H.R. 2918) by a vote of 62 to 38. Prior to that, members also voted to waive rule-related points of order against the measure by a vote of 61 to 39 and a budget point of order from Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) by a vote of 61 to 39.
According to a Democratic Policy Committee summary, the bill would provide “$4.656 billion for operations of the legislative branch, an increase of $155 million, or 3.5 percent, over the amounts appropriated for legislative branch agency operations in 2009.” No Republican summary was available at publish time.
In addition, House and Senate conferees attached a Continuing Resolution (CR) onto the appropriations bill which will keep the government functioning at current spending levels through October 31 of this year.
The summary notes that the following programs would be extended for one month under the CR:

Who on Wall Street is willing to break camp and call for real change in the industry that crippled our global economy?
Strong managers and real leaders not only identify problems before they develop, but they define and implement solutions as well. No one individual or institution led us into the current economic mess and no one individual or institution will lead us out. That said, if leaders in finance want to regain a degree of credibility and respect, they can not expect to be accorded those benefits by merely identifying problems in global finance. They must also provide answers and policies which cut across the entire global economic landscape and serve the interests of all. I have yet to see this type of leadership from anybody on Wall Street or any other center of global finance.
Identifying a problem without proffering a solution is nothing short of pandering. I witness exactly that in reading the London Evening Standard’s, JP Morgan’s London Head Slams ‘Greed’ of Bankers:
Bill Winters One of the most senior investment bankers in London has weighed in on the controversy over pay in the industry, attacking City and Wall Street employees as “greedy” and “inept”.
Bill Winters, the co-chief executive of JPMorgan’s investment banking arm, laid the blame for the financial crisis squarely on the shoulders of his fellow bankers.
“The crisis is about the collapse of the integrated wholesale banking system. The primary culprit was a wholesale banking market where borrowing was made to the wrong people at the wrong price,” he told a debate hosted by the Investment Management Association. [...]

“If you want to stop excessive pay in a swollen financial sector you have to reduce the size of that sector or apply special taxes to its pre-remuneration profit.”
–Lord Adair Turner, Britain’s chief financial regulator.
“The big disadvantage of most taxes is that they discourage some really productive activity. This [Wall Street transaction tax] would discourage numerous financial transactions. People flip their assets several times in an hour or a day. They make money but does it really add to the productive base of the United States?”
–Thea Lee, AFL-CIO Policy Director
Every working American knows the difference between going to work and going to Vegas… unless you’re on Wall Street. There you can pretend that pure speculative activity (that produces no real economic value) should be the most highly rewarded activity in the world — higher than any other occupation, ever. A year has past since this selfish fantasy crashed into a tragic toxic stew, sending nearly 30 million from full-time jobs to the unemployment lines or to part-time work. Yet, we still have failed to put a lid on fantasy finance.
We were fools to let the casino engulf nearly a quarter of our economy in the first place. And we’ll be even bigger fools if we miss this moment to slap a tax on all financial transactions, the very best tool we have to reign in Wall Street’s destructive excesses.

Indonesia’s gross domestic product grew by 4% in the second quarter compared to the same period a year ago, Statistics Indonesia reported on Monday on its Web site. This was the slowest pace since 2003, but was slightly better than consensus estimates, said analysts at RBC Capital Markets.
“Indonesia is less exposed to the global downturn that most other Asian economies and domestic demand appears to have held up well, with consumption and government spending recording solid year-on-year growth,” the analysts wrote in a note to clients. “Growth is likely to pick up in coming quarters, suggesting last week’s policy rate cut by the central bank represents the end to its easing cycle.” Jakarta’s JSX Composite stock index rose 1.7% on Monday. The index has rallied 76% this year
