When chocolate shop owner Rhonda Dehn sees a big heart-shaped box of Sweetest Day chocolates, she is not happy at all. And it is not that she hates chocolate as she is the owner of Morkes Chocolate shops in Algonquin and Palatine.
The reason behind her unhappiness is that she feels that Sweetest Day, which falls on the third Saturday of October (today), is meant to be a holiday that is celebrated by small gestures of charity and kindness, not big lavish gifts for you partner.
According to dailyherald.com, Dehn says that Sweetest Day, which apparently began 87 years ago, is not about spending loads of money, but just about doing something nice. Dehn will be spending her Sweetest Day taking chocolates to senior homes.
And Dehn is definitely right about the origin of Sweetest Day. It all started off, when a Cleveland candy store owner decided to take little sweet gifts to homebound people, orphans and the elderly, thus leading people to call the day Sweetest Day.
